The Colleoni Chapel
The Chapel, built by Giovanni Antonio Amadeo and commissioned from Bartolomeo
Colleoni as his own tomb, is considered one of the leading works of the Lombardy
artists. The chapel, started in 1470 and completed in 1476, was built on the
site of the ancient demolished vestry of S. Maria Maggiore in a square plan
for the tomb and a smaller area with the altar. The façade is inlaid
and decorated with marble in many colours, and uses both renaissance and medieval
styles freely, which are further decorated with sculptured elements. The façade
of the chapel is in harmony with the edifice of the Basilica but is even more
magnificent. Inside are the monumental Colleoni tomb, which is gothic but has
been reinterpreted in renaissance style and the tomb of Medea Colleoni, the
daughter of Bartolomeo, who died in 1470.
